Pinball Wizard Allium

Pinball Wizard Ornamental Onion (Allium Pinball Wizard) is a spectacular bulbous perennial that impresses with its enormous deep purple spherical flower clusters carried on sturdy stems reaching 80 to 100 cm in height. Blooming from May to June, it creates a striking architectural effect while adding height, rhythm, and vibrant colour to garden beds. Its blue-green foliage elegantly accompanies the emerging flower stems before naturally turning yellow after flowering. Hardy to Zone 4, this perennial bulb performs exceptionally well in Quebec gardens and is an outstanding choice for creating a dramatic focal point in early summer.

Plant the bulbs in fall at a depth of 15 to 20 cm, spacing them 20 to 30 cm apart. Pinball Wizard prefers full sun and light, fertile, perfectly drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Water lightly after planting, then moderately during active growth, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Once established, this allium tolerates dry periods very well. A light application of compost in spring is generally sufficient. After flowering, allow the foliage to turn completely yellow before cutting it back so the bulb can replenish its reserves for the following year.

Perfect for large flower beds, contemporary gardens, naturalistic plantings, and pollinator-friendly spaces, this allium pairs beautifully with peonies, sage, catmint, coneflowers, and ornamental grasses. Its large purple flower spheres create striking contrast among late-spring perennials while adding structure without making plantings feel heavy. Rich in nectar, the flowers attract bees, butterflies, and many other beneficial insects, helping support garden biodiversity. The flower clusters are also exceptional in fresh or dried bouquets and remain decorative for several months.
