Garlic 'Music'

Music Garlic (Allium sativum var. ophioscorodon Music) is a hardneck porcelain garlic variety prized for its vigor, large bulbs, and generous cloves that are easy to peel. Its upright blue-green foliage adds strong presence to the vegetable garden, while its pinkish-purple bulbs provide a harvest that is both beautiful and flavorful. Its rich, full garlic flavor is excellent in stews, sauces, marinades, preserves, roasted garlic, and garlic confit. Very hardy, Music Garlic is exceptionally well adapted to cold Canadian climates and stores well after proper curing.

Plant Music Garlic cloves in autumn, from September through November, in a sunny location. It prefers light, fertile, organic-rich, perfectly drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH to produce large, uniform bulbs. Set each clove with the pointed end facing upward, then apply mulch to protect the soil through winter. In spring, maintain even moisture without waterlogging, weed as needed, and remove the curling scapes to encourage bulb development. Reduce watering before harvest from July through August.

In the garden, Music Garlic is perfect for family vegetable gardens, edible landscapes, raised beds, and large container plantings. It grows well near Beets, Carrots, Lettuce, Tomatoes, and Roses while helping diversify edible plantings. Avoid planting it near Beans, Peas, and Asparagus, and rotate crops to maintain healthy soil. The flower scapes can be harvested for cooking or left temporarily for their ornamental value and appeal to certain beneficial insects.
